Bonny Eagle boys edge top-seeded Thornton Academy for AA South title

In a matchup of the top two seeds in the Class AA South boys’ bracket, No. 2 Bonny Eagle High School of Standish held off No. 1 Thornton Academy of Saco 48-44 to advance to the state championship game.

The Scots will face Class AA North champion Bangor High School at 9:05 p.m. on March 2 back at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland for the gold ball. Bonny Eagle played Bangor in its last trip to the state title game as well, losing by a score of 52-41 back in 1995.

The Scots’ only state championship came in Class B in 1970, when they defeated Schenck High School of East Millinocket, 72-52.

In the Class AA South final Friday, the Golden Trojans took a slim lead early, up 9-7 after the first period, and hung onto an advantage into the second, but the Scots scored six unanswered points in the final two minutes of the second stanza to edge in front by halftime, 17-14, the Press Herald reported.

Bonny Eagle was up 29-23 after three quarters, then held on through a higher-scoring fourth quarter for the victory.

The Scots were led in scoring by Zach Maturo, who put in 20 points, followed by Will Hendrix’ 11 and Jacob Humphrey’s 10.

With the win, Bonny Eagle improves to 18-3 on the season, while Thornton Academy ends its season with a 16-5 mark.

Thornton Academy reached the regional final by topping No. 5 Scarborough High School in the semifinal round Tuesday, 67-40, after knocking out No. 8 Noble High School of North Berwick, 66-29, in the quarterfinal round.

The Golden Trojans were led Friday by Payton Jones, who scored 16 points in the loss.

Bonny Eagle reached the regional final by coming from behind to defeat No. 3 South Portland, 55-50, in the semifinal and besting Massabesic High School of Waterboro in the quarterfinals, 49-34.

Bonny Eagle last reached the regional final in 2014, when the Scots were knocked out by Portland High School.

Thornton Academy was knocked out in the semifinal round last season, losing to South Portland in a 51-36 affair.
