Eighth-seeded Wells High School continued its improbable march toward its third straight Class B South boys’ regional final Thursday, eliminating No. 4 Gray-New Gloucester High School in the semifinal, 49-37.

The Warriors, two-time reigning Class B South champions, came into the tournament with an 8-10 record and had to go through a preliminary play-in game to make it to the quarterfinal round. But Wells comfortably won the prelim over Lisbon High School, 60-44, then turned the bracket upside down by knocking off top-seeded Mountain Valley High School, 62-52, in the quarters.

Gray-New Gloucester and Wells faced off in the tournament last season as well, with the Warriors claiming a 54-33 victory in the semifinal round.

Wells reached the state title game each of the last two seasons, losing last year to Hermon High School and in 2017 to Mount Desert Island High School.

With the victory, Wells improves to 11-10 and will play in the Class B South final at 2:45 p.m. Saturday back at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The Patriots end their season at 13-7.
