Thornton eliminates reigning AA South champ Scarborough boys

The No. 1 Thornton Academy boys’ basketball team defeated No. 5 Scarborough High School 67-40 Tuesday night in its Class AA South semifinal round matchup at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

The Trojans improve to 16-4 and advance to the regional final Friday at 8 p.m. in Portland, where they will face the No. 2 Bonny Eagle High School of Standish. Thornton Academy, of Saco, beat Noble High School of North Berwick, 66-29, in the quarterfinal round.

Thornton Academy was knocked out in the semifinal round last season, losing to South Portland in a 51-36 affair.

Scarborough emerged from the Class AA South bracket as the 2018 regional champs, ultimately losing in the state title game to Edward Little High School.

The Red Storm, who beat No. 4 Gorham High School by a 65-49 score in this year’s quarterfinals, end their season with an 11-9 mark.
