The third-seeded Valley High School boys’ basketball team took care of business Monday in Augusta, defeating No. 6 Vinalhaven School by a 58-43 score in the Class D South quarterfinal.
Valley’s Keegan Farnham scored 12 first-half points as the Cavaliers built up a 30-15 halftime lead, the Kennebec Journal reported.
The Vikings came out strong in the second half and closed the gap to eight points, 40-32, heading into the fourth quarter, according to the Kennebec Journal’s Travis Lazarczyk. But Valley pulled away in the fourth to secure the 15-point victory.
Farnham finished the game with 19 points, while Mikael Stone scored 20 in the loss for Vinalhaven, according to WMTW television’s Travis Lee.
Valley, of Bingham, improves to 14-5 and will next take the floor for a semifinal round matchup Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. back in Augusta. The Vikings finish their season 2-15 with the loss.
The Cavaliers were eliminated from the tournament in the semifinal round by the South Portland-based A.R. Gould School each of the last two seasons, after winning the state championship in 2016. Vinalhaven didn’t play in the tournament last season, and was knocked out in the quarterfinals of each of the previous three tourneys.
