Leader of Maine’s state lobster marketing group steps down

The leader of a state lobster marketing group in Maine is stepping down from his post.

Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative executive director Matt Jacobson will resign from his position on Feb. 25. The Portland Press Herald reports the lobster marketing board plans to start a search for Jacobson’s replacement right away.

Jacobson is a former Republican candidate for governor who was hired as the first executive director of the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative in 2014. The board has a $2.2 million annual marketing budget that it uses to promote Maine’s signature seafood item.

On Jacobson’s watch, the collaborative has prioritized a push to market Maine’s soft-shell lobsters as “new shell” lobsters to chefs.

The collaborative gets its money from fees paid by members of the lobster industry.
