Gabrielle Wener scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter on Friday night, leading No. 5 Messalonskee of Oakland to a 39-33 upset of No. 4 Gardiner in a Class A North girls quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center.
Alyssa Benness tallied eight points for Messalonskee.
For the Tigers, Aime Adams led the way with 11 points and Bailey Poore finished with eight points.
Messalonskee’s record improves to 11-8 for the season. Gardiner ends its season at 12-7.
Messalonskee advances to play the winner of Friday’s late game between No. 1 Skowhegan (18-0) vs. No. 8 Camden Hills (7-11). That semifinal game will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center.
Messalonskee advanced to the A North finals before losing to Hampden Academy, 42-37, in the 2018 tourney. Gardiner fell out of last year’s tourney during the quarterfinal round, after falling to Hampden Academy 37-29.
