Game notes: UMBC enters Sunday’s contest ranked third in America East, while UMaine is seventh. UMaine jumped out to a 31-19 halftime lead in its league opener at UMBC, only to have the defending conference champions outscore the Black Bears 41-21 after intermission. Fleming led UMaine in that game with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Black Bears had their two-game conference winning streak halted 86-63 Wednesday at Vermont. Vermont led 49-33 at halftime, the most points UMaine has allowed in the first half of any conference game this season, only the third time the Black Bears have trailed at intermission of an AE contest this winter. White paced UMaine with 21 points, while Fleming scored 16 points and El Darwich added 11. UMBC had its five-game conference winning streak halted in a 70-61 loss to Hartford on Wednesday. The Retrievers are the only team to defeat Vermont in conference play this season, winning 74-61 Jan. 23 at Vermont. UMBC leads AE in including scoring defense (63.3 ppg), turnover margin (3.29) and steals per game (8.0). UMaine ranks second in America East in steals (7.7 spg). UMaine visits Hartford on Wednesday.
