For the past 29 years, the U.S. National Toboggan Championships has drawn thousands of people, both racers and spectators, to the Camden Snow Bowl annually for one weekend in February. The annual event features teams who build, buy or borrow wooden toboggans, then fly down a chute at upwards of 40 mph.
The average run down the 440-foot chute takes about 10 seconds — 10 seconds that can feel absolutely terrifying for some, or exhilarating for others. The video above was taken by BDN Outdoors reporter Aislinn Sarnacki in 2016.
This year’s event kicks off Friday and continues throughout the weekend. Read more about what to expect this weekend here.
And if you’re planning to compete, or even just spectate, here are some tips from Sarnacki — who has competed multiple times — to help you prepare.
