But you still need to activate your account.
We erroneously reported on Tuesday that Jason Moody, a Bangor musician, died that morning after an assault over the weekend.
Moody died later that day, but he was still on life support when our story was published just after 1 p.m. We immediately corrected the story when we learned of our mistake. It was a serious error, and one that we do not take lightly. We apologize to the Moody family.
The misinformation we published came from Moody’s bandmate. In an interview, he told us that Moody had died. He also posted it on the band’s Facebook page.
But that is no excuse. We were wrong to rely on his account. We’re responding by establishing a higher standard.
Beginning immediately, deaths will be reported only once confirmed by an official source or someone with direct knowledge. That includes law enforcement, an employer or an immediate family member, such as a parent, spouse or sibling.
We are always working to improve our coverage, and we take seriously the trust that is placed in us. If we ever fall short, please let us know.
