PORTLAND, Maine — Executive Chef Matthew Ginn of Evo Kitchen and Bar won the first round of the Food Network’s cooking competition show “Chopped” Tuesday night.
Ginn and his supporters gathered at Evo to watch the chef compete.
On “Chopped,” contestants must use a basket of mystery ingredients to produce three courses — an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert — for a panel of judges.
This time, Ginn took on other champions for $50,000 and a new car.
Everyone who competed were already winners in other episodes, which Ginn says elevated the competition.
“Well I knew the competition would be a lot better. You’ve got four winners, no one has lost, so you know you’ve got to bring your A-game to win,” Ginn said. “You cook for a long period of the day, and it’s very fast in a very short amount of time that you have to put some really meticulous food together. So [there’s] a lot of pressure on you in those moments.”
The judges really loved his red snapper entrée and they praised his technique before awarding him the title.
Ginn will now compete in the Grand Championship Round airing on Nov. 6.
