Lt. Robert Martin of the Portland Police Department talks to CBS 13 about a rash of thefts in the city's Old Port Monday.

Portland police are investigating after a rash of commercial break-ins in the Old Port.

It’s been happening over the past week, with the latest one being reported Monday morning.

Portland police say a thief or thieves are entering downtown offices, but aren’t forcing their way in.

Thieves target checkbooks left in unsecured desks and filing cabinets, and then take checks from the center of those books, police say.

In most cases, the crime is only discovered after the stolen checks are cashed.

Police are reminding business owners to keep petty cash, checks and personal belongings locked in a secure location, both during the day while you are open and at night.
