A head-on collision between a car and tractor-trailer in Alfred Wednesday sent both vehicles into buildings and both drivers to the hospital, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. along Route 202, where an ice patch caused one of the vehicles to cross the centerline and strike the other, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Both vehicles hit roadside buildings, but caused little damage to them, he said.
Photos show the car’s front end was completely smashed in the crash. Its driver, 62-year-old Mary McNally of Hollis, was taken to Portland’s Maine Medical Center, McCausland said.
The truck appeared to be in better shape, and its driver, Elias Kiongo, of Knoxville, Tennessee, was briefly hospitalized at Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford, he said.
Maine State Police were still working late Wednesday to figure out which driver lost control of the wheel, McCausland said. The collision shut down the road for about two hours.
