Husson University standouts John Smith and Quan Soyini have been named to the 2017 New England Football Writers’ Division II/III All-New England Team.

The duo helped the Eagles win the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference championship and the program’s first NCAA Division III Tournament victory. Husson ended its season at 10-2.

Smith, a senior tailback from Fayetteville, Georgia, led all of Division III nationally this fall with 2,242 rushing yards and in rushing yards per game (186.8) while tying for the national lead with 31 rushing touchdowns.

Previously named the New England College Division Player of the Year, Smith finished his four seasons at Husson with 7,205 rushing yards on 1,170 attempts. He holds 55 school and New England Division III records.

Soyini, a junior cornerback from Manchester, Connecticut, became Husson’s single-season and career leader in interceptions, with nine picks in 11 games this fall including an interception in each of the Eagles’ two NCAA Division III tournament games.

An All-ECFC first-team selection on both offense as a kick returner and on defense this season, he finished his second year as a full-time starter at cornerback with 40 tackles (3.0 for loss), 1.5 sacks and 14 pass breakups to go with his nine interceptions.

Soyini has 14 career interceptions in 32 games at Husson.
