Camden man struck and killed by dump truck on Route 1

A 90-year-old man was struck and killed by a dump truck early Thursday morning on Route 1 in Camden.

Around 4:20 a.m., a driver heading south on Route 1 noticed a man, later identified as Henry Dircks, lying in the roadway. The driver stopped and attempted to alert an oncoming dump truck of the person in the roadway, but the driver of the truck could not stop in time and struck Dircks, according to a release from Camden Police Chief Randy M. Gagne.

Travis Payne, 35, of Plymouth was driving the dump truck. Gagne said “visibility in the area at the time of the accident was poor due to heavy rain and fog.”

It is not clear why Dircks was lying in the roadway, Gagne said. The accident occurred in front of his home and police believe he left his home sometime during the morning hours. Dircks was not wearing shoes and was dressed in sleeping attire.

Dircks is listed as a resident of both Camden and New Jersey.

The incident remains under investigation by Camden and Rockport Police. Police are asking anyone who was traveling in the area during the early morning hours to contact the Camden Police Department if they saw anything that might be helpful.
