Farmingdale fire displaces 8 people, kills 7 pets

A family of eight is looking for a new home after a fire Friday night in Farmingdale where several pets died.

Firefighters responded to 871 Northern Ave. around 10 p.m. Friday, finding heavy flames on the front of a trailer with the family outside.

While the main fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, crews spent hours overhauling the trailer, Assistant Fire Chief Mike LaPlante said.

At least seven of the family’s eight pets died from smoke inhalation, LaPlante said. The home suffered significant damage and the family does not plan to return, he said.

Crews from several towns responded to the fire. The state fire marshal’s office began investigating the scene Saturday, but no cause has been determined.
