A 53-year-old woman died after the fishing boat she was in capsized Sunday morning off Biddeford Pool, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.
The woman’s body was found around 2 p.m. Sunday by Maine Marine Patrol divers, Petty Officer Andrew Barresi said.
The woman’s name and hometown were being withheld by authorities, pending notification of family.
Barresi said the boating accident was reported to the Coast Guard by someone who heard a gunshot meant to serve as a distress signal around 10:30 a.m.
The person who reported to the Coast Guard found a 21-foot Cuddy Cabin boat overturned about 10 miles off the coast of Biddeford Pool. He rescued three people but could not find the fourth person who had been aboard.
Maine Department of Marine Resources spokesman Jeff Nichols said Sunday that no one on board had been wearing a life jacket.
Nichols said the group had been fishing when their boat was hit by a wave and capsized.
