A massive crane blocked I-295 southbound traffic for hours Friday night.

Fire officials say multiple vehicles were involved.

The owner of the crane said that his driver told him his engine and power steering stalled and, and that may have been what caused the crash. He says it’s an 80,000-pound machine.

Another car was smashed behind it.

State police and Portland fire responded to the incident just after 4 p.m.

The crane was stuck between exits 7 and 8 on I-295.

Traffic southbound was shut down completely at times. Northbound was down to a lane for more than an hour.

State police managed the heavy traffic as crews removed the crane from the median and loaded the mangled car caught in its path.

Two hours after the incident, both vehicles were towed away. I-295 was fully reopened just after 6:30 p.m.

It’s unclear how many people were inside the other vehicle involved in this crash, but one person was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
