Vehicles are at a standstill on Interstate 95 Southbound near Carmel on Thursday. A vehicle fire spread into nearby woods, causing the traffic jam.

CARMEL, Maine — Traffic on Interstate 95 near the Etna exit was snarled Thursday afternoon because of a car fire that spread to the woods, according to state police.

The Maine Department of Transportation has a detour in place, according to state police, and one lane is open to traffic.

MDOT spokesman Ted Talbot said the fire is about 1,000 yards in length and has stretched 500 yards into the woods.

Even though 75 percent of the fire has been contained, long travel delays are expected.
