Stand up paddling, or Hoe he’e nalu if you’re in Hawaii, is a form of surfing in which the rider stands upright on a SUP and uses a paddle to propel the board forward. Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) boards are generally longer, wider, and thicker than standard surfer boards. A standard SUP size is roughly 9 to 12 feet in length as opposed to the standard surfboard, which is typically 6 or 7 feet long.
The sport has gained popularity around the world in recent years and has made its way to Maine where surfers and SUP enthusiasts can be found dotting Higgins Beach when the waves are just right.
