EAST MACHIAS, Maine — A temporary bridge being used for traffic over the East Machias River on Route 191 was closed after it was hit by a vehicle Monday afternoon, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.

The bridge will be closed until further notice, requiring motorists wanting to get to either side of the river to take a detour of about 40 miles, according to a statement on the Department of Transportation’s website.

The temporary bridge was put in place while construction on a replacement bridge is underway. Department of Transportation engineers are evaluating the extent of damage to determine when the temporary bridge might be reopened.

No information about the accident was immediately available.
