PORTAGE LAKE, Maine — Two men escaped injury after a crash in Portage.

Maine State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Clark said in a written statement on Tuesday that the accident took place just before 5:30 Sunday evening on West Road in Portage Lake.

Clark said that Trooper Travis Luce responded to the accident and found that Mark Chasse, 19, of Ashland was operating a 2007 Pontiac passenger car and was traveling above the posted limit when he met a 1994 Peterbilt tractor-trailer unit operated by Gardner Flemming, 51, of Chester. Chasse stated that the truck crossed the centerline, which caused him to go off the paved way into the soft shoulder. This caused the car to skid across the road, coming to rest in the ditch. Chasse said that he was not wearing a seat belt and struck his head on the windshield. Chasse was not taken to the hospital

Flemming was not aware of the accident and continued on to the mill, where Luce met with him.
