BANGOR, Maine — The Orono Bog Boardwalk reopened Thursday afternoon after volunteers repaired damage that vandals apparently did the previous night, boardwalk Director Jim Bird said late Thursday afternoon.

Bird said 16 sections of railing were kicked off and 16 deck boards were broken. The damage has been reported to police, he said.

While the dollar value of the damage was not high, at less than $50, it did take a group of six volunteers more than two hours to complete the repairs, he said, adding that the materials needed to do so already were on site.

Bird said that he believes whoever broke parts of the boardwalk likely gained access to it by jumping the gate.

Unlike a vandalism spree that occurred at the boardwalk in July 2011, this week’s incident was not captured on the boardwalk’s surveillance camera.

The boardwalk, which usually opens at 7 a.m., reopened about 2:30 p.m.
