PORTLAND, Maine — An investigation is underway after one person was shot less than a block away from Maine Medical Center.
Investigators said they found one person Monday night suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police said they rushed to the scene on Chadwick Street around 8:30 p.m. after a call came in for what they described as a “disturbance.”
Investigators said they found one man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Maine Medical Center. The victim had surgery Monday night, and police said he’s in stable condition.
Portland police said they took another man into custody after the shooting. Investigators said he has been talking to them. He was released without being charged Tuesday morning.
Police said there’s no threat to public safety. Some people who live nearby said what happened is surprising.
“It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood. The only commotion we hear are the ambulances coming in,” resident Tom Johnson said.
Portland police remained on scene overnight and early Tuesday morning.
