UMPI softball team rallies for win in national tourney

AKRON, Ohio — Dalynn Jacobs’ sacrifice fly in the ninth inning lifted the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls by the Penn College Wildcats 4-3 in a consolation-round game at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association softball tourney Tuesday.

The win gave UMPI a ninth-place finish in the tourney.

With UMPI runner Jordi Legassie starting on second base because of the extra-inning rule, Hannah Williams put down a sacrifice bunt to move Legassie to third and she scored on Jacobs’ sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats scored two runs in the eighth on Taylor Krow and Kelseyh Gantz RBI singles but UMPI tied it when Sara Packard and Nicole Marcucci each singled and Packard scored on an error. Marcucci then came around on Amanda Allen’s groundout to second.

Packard got the win after scattering eight hits over nine innings. She didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Williams finished with four hits.
