ROCKLAND, Maine — A local man was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with Wednesday’s burglary at Oceanside High School East.

Brian Burch, 23, was charged with burglary by Detective Sgt. Russell Thompson and Detective Joel Neal, according to a news release from the Rockland Police Department.

Burch also is being held on a probation violation. Additional charges of criminal mischief and theft are expected to be brought against Burch, according to police.

Sgt. Donald Finnegan said that Burch stole a fire extinguisher and broke several doorknobs with damage estimated at $800.

“There’s no rhyme or reason to this one,” Finnegan said.

The department said it received numerous tips from the public after circulating photographs and a video of the suspect from the school’s surveillance system. Some of the tips led to evidence that allegedly tied Burch to the burglary.

“The public’s help in this investigation was fantastic,” said Deputy Chief Chris Young. “Through the media and the public sharing the photos and video of the suspect, they reached over 200,000 people. This is another example of our community and their police department working together to keep Rockland safe.”

Rockland police continue to probe another burglary last week at South School. The department urged anyone with information about that crime to call 594-0316.
