BELFAST, Maine — A group of five young adults who were arrested in connection with the Jan. 8 burglary and robbery of Patterson’s General Store in Burnham have been indicted by the Waldo County grand jury.
The owner of the store interrupted the burglary and was attacked by one of the burglars after he went to investigate why one of his lights wasn’t working in the early morning hours, according to Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton. The burglars ran off, the owner called police, and within a few days, police had begun to make arrests, Trafton said.
Over the course of the investigation, police determined that three people had initially broken into the store and then left the premises. Two returned an hour later to steal more items when they were interrupted by the owner, according to Detective Gerry Lincoln of the sheriff’s office. The burglars succeeded in stealing “a lot” of tobacco products and alcohol, including Twisted Tea and Angry Orchard, Lincoln said.
Michael McGregor, 22, of Canaan was charged with burglary and theft by unauthorized taking. Matthew Shaw, 20, of Hartland and David W. Pedone, 22, of East Newport each were charged with robbery, burglary and theft by unauthorized taking.
Those three men went into the store, Lincoln said.
Also indicted in connection with the break-in were John Michael Ryan, 19, of Fairfield and Sarah B.J. Chase, 19, of Burnham, both of whom were charged with robbery, burglary and unauthorized taking.
Ryan drove a vehicle used in the crime and Chase was a passenger in that vehicle, according to Lincoln. Both were charged based on accomplice liability, he said.
“Once these arrests were made, they led to several other cases being solved in Somerset and Kennebec counties,” Lincoln said.
Both Shaw and McGregor are facing other charges in those counties, according to media reports.
