BRUNSWICK, Maine — A New York man has been charged with felony aggravated assault and domestic violence terrorizing after allegedly attempting to strangle his girlfriend and threatening to burn down her Brunswick apartment building.

Police went to a Cumberland Avenue residence on Feb. 29 after a 34-year-old woman reported that her boyfriend, 28-year-old Jason P. Mcguire of Churchville, New York, had struck her several times and attempted to strangle her, Brunswick police Cmdr. Marc Hagan said.

The woman also reported that Mcguire threatened to set fire to her apartment building.

Officers allegedly found physical evidence of attempted strangulation, signs that the pair had struggled and broken glass in the apartment.

Mcguire was no longer at the apartment when police arrived, but he returned while they were there and was arrested. He was taken to Cumberland County Jail and held without bail, Hagan said.

Mcguire is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court on April 19.
