SEBAGO, Maine — One man is dead and a second man is in custody after a shooting on Hancock Pond Road around noon Saturday, according to Maine State Police.

Charles Cross, 66, was shot outside the home he shared with a longtime girlfriend, Paula Simonds, 59, according to a news release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland. It was Simonds who called police.

Charged with murder is David Pinkham, 67, of Bridgton, who was taken to the Cumberland County jail. The two men did know each other and state police are now attempting to determine what sparked the violence, McCausland said.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department deputies and Bridgton police assisted in the case.

Pinkham was still being booked into the jail at 5:30 p.m., but a jail supervisor said it was unlikely that Pinkham would be allowed to make bail before appearing at Cumberland County Superior Court on Monday.
