So, what rock legend is coming to Bangor, Maine, in June? After rumors circulated over the weekend, the Cross Insurance Center confirmed Monday that Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band will be playing there on June 8.
Tickets, which go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, will start at $49.
The 7:30 p.m. concert was formally announced by the City of Bangor and Spectra Venue Management, managers of the Cross Insurance Center, Monday afternoon.
The former Beatles drummer announced a packed monthlong tour schedule for late spring/early summer beginning with a June 3 concert in Syracuse, New York, and ending in Los Angeles, California. The tour will wrap up on July 3, just days before the British musician, actor, director, writer and artist’s 76th birthday on July 7.
His All Starr Band will feature the musical talents of Todd Rundgren and Greg Rolie (Santana and Journey), Steve Lukather (Toto), Richard Page (Mr. Mister), Greg Bissonette (ELO) and Warren Ham. The show is expected to include hits from Starr’s solo career, Beatles favorites and songs from each All-Starr bandmates’ own hit lists.
Born Richard Starkey in Liverpool, England, Starr was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his solo career in 2015 (actually, though, that was his second induction — The Beatles were inducted in 1988). Though he rose to fame as part of The Beatles, Starr has spent decades performing as a solo artist and has released 18 studio albums, including his most recent, “Postcards from Paradise,” released last year.
“John Lennon called Ringo Starr ‘warm, unassuming, funny … Ringo was quite simply the heart of the Beatles.’ Of course, it’s an honor for any community to welcome a former member of The Beatles, the biggest selling musical group in history,” said Bangor Mayor Sean Faircloth in a statement. “Welcoming Ringo and his All-Starr Band to Bangor will be a stellar celebration for a city on the rise.”
As part of The Beatles, Starr won an Academy Award for their song “Let It Be,” which was on the soundtrack for a movie of the same title. They also won a Grammy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special for “Let It Be.”
In a 2015 article in Rolling Stone, writer Stephen Rodrick wrote: “Starting with his Beatle days, Ringo Starr has always been the mascot of rock and roll.” And now, that Beatle … he’s bringing his happy-go-lucky rocking to the Queen City.
