VERONA ISLAND – Geraldine Grace Carney Baxter passed peacefully at home on December 8, 2015. Gerry was born on September 26, 1929 in Milford, Maine; the oldest child of Vernon S. Carney and Mildred (Smith) Carney.
The Carney family moved to the Bucksport area in 1930 where Gerry attended schools in Bucksport and Verona Island. In 1947, she became a member of the Elm Street Congregational Church. She graduated from Bucksport High School – Class of 1948. She dated William N. Baxter while they were students at BHS and they were married by the Rev. Charles T. Brown on September 6th, 1949. After their marriage, they lived briefly in Bucksport before moving to Verona Island in 1950.
Gerry is survived by her children: Scott W. Baxter and his wife Linda of Bangor; Lynn B. Jacques and her husband Thomas of Snellville, GA; Gail B. Creath and her husband Irving of Holden; Eric J. Baxter and his wife Pamela of Bangor; her grandchildren Mark. W. Baxter and his wife Brigette of Ellsworth; Laura F. Doak and her husband Patrick of Brewer; Scott T. Jacques and his wife Andrea of Atlanta, GA; Stephen S. Baxter and his fiancée Liz of Bangor; Robert W. Jacques and his wife Elizabeth of Washington, DC; Hannah M. Baxter of Bangor; step-grandchildren Carrie Newey of Winterport and Ivan Creath of Tulsa, OK; Great grandchildren Madison and Marilyn Baxter of Bangor; Tyrus Baxter of Ellsworth; Charlotte Doak of Brewer; Step-great grandchildren Gunnar and Garrett Newey of Winterport and Isaac Wardwell of Ellsworth; One sister Viola M. Nickerson of Belfast, and two brothers, William G. Carney and his wife Helen of Saco, and Richard S. Carney and his wife Jean of Waterboro.
Lord, bless this family that I love and comfort them each day – as daytime turns to nighttime, bring them peace, I pray. When morning comes tomorrow, let their cares be small – guide them with your wisdom, Lord, bless them one and all.
Gerry was predeceased by her husband Bill of 57 years in 2006, her father in 1981 and her mother in 1985; her youngest brother Donald Carney in 2002, her brother Robert Carney in 2010, and her sister Pauline Carey in 2015.
God is never more than a prayer away. May he guide you safely day by day.
At Gerry’s request there will be no visiting hours or graveside service. We will honor her request for an internment at the Riverview Cemetery in North Bucksport at a later date.
