SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Maine’s former Senator — and senate majority leader — George Mitchell attended an event in Scarborough that bears his name.

The Maine Democratic Party hosted the “Perkins-Mitchell Dinner” Friday night. CBS 13 asked Mitchell about the president’s plan to bring 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S.

Mitchell says there is a lot of misinformation out there — and that most of the refugees are women, children and the elderly. Mitchell also says they go through a lengthy screening process that can take more than a year, and that the 20 million Europeans who enter the U.S. each year don’t face such rigorous restrictions.
