Police arrest 2 suspects in foiled Whiting armed robbery

WHITING, Maine — Two men were arrested Sunday evening in connection with an attempted armed robbery in this Washington County town.

Kristopher Preston, 28, and Richard Guptill, 28, both of Roque Bluffs, were charged with attempted robbery, according to a news release issued Monday from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The men were arrested Sunday following a 911 call from a man on Gardner’s Lake Road in Whiting, who said two men in masks attempted to rob him at gunpoint shortly before 3 p.m. The homeowner was armed and was able to foil the robbery, firing several shots as the suspects fled on foot. One or both allegedly fired back at him as they fled, according to the news release.

Members of the sheriff’s office, state police, marine patrol and warden service responded to the homeowner’s 911 call.

The victim was able to identify one of the two assailants, even though they tried to conceal their identities, police said.

Several empty shell casings were found at the scene along with evidence pointing to the identity of one of the men, police said.

Police issued an alert to all law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the two suspects, police said.

Preston was arrested by state police in Ellsworth around 11:30 p.m. and taken to the Hancock County Jail, police said.

Guptill was located at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. Once he was released from the hospital, he was arrested for the attempted robbery and transported to Washington County Jail.

Police continue to investigate the incident and further charges are likely.
