BOWDOINHAM, Maine — People in Bowdoinham say mystery charges are appearing from several states away.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said he has had about a dozen complaints in the past few days, nine from Bowdoinham alone. But pay a visit to town, and you’ll quickly learn this problem is far bigger and even a little bit bizarre.
“Was there a business that had a data breach? Was a device attached to an ATM or another card-reading machine?” Merry asked. “That’s one of the things we’re looking at at this point.”
His investigation is just getting started. But for now, more people are paying with cash.
The Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection says if you find a mystery charge on your statement, you have 60 days to dispute it. Don’t call the merchant listed. Reach out directly to your bank or credit union.
