FAIRFIELD, Maine — Police are looking for a man who stole a tractor-trailer from a local shop yard early Thursday morning.

Employees arriving for work at the Sheridan Corp. found their gate smashed around 5 a.m., according to Fairfield police Sgt. Matthew Bard.

The suspect allegedly used the stolen flatbed truck as a battering ram to smash the security gate, Bard said.

While police were investigating and interviewing employees, another worker notified officers the truck was found sitting in the breakdown lane of an Exit 132 on-ramp to Interstate 95 with its wipers going and lights on, Bard said.

As of Friday afternoon, the suspect, described as a tall white man with dark hair, remains on the loose, but police believe they know who he is, Bard said.

Anyone with knowledge on the case is asked to call Fairfield police at 453-9321 and ask for Officer Casey Dugas or Detective Sgt. Paul St. Amand.
