Woman robbed in Portland uses gun to scare off assailant

PORTLAND, Maine — A 35-year-old Cumberland woman was reportedly robbed at knifepoint Friday afternoon in Portland.

The alleged victim told police that a man approached her as she walked to her car in a parking lot at 106 Gilman St. at 2:45 p.m. Friday, and threatened her with a knife when she said she had nothing to give him.

The woman continued to tell the man she had no money, and eventually entered her car where she had a handgun, according to a release from the Portland Police Department. She pointed the gun at the suspect and told him to leave her alone, and the suspect left in an unknown direction.

The woman fled in her car and later reported the incident to police.

The suspect is described as a black male between 20 and 30 years old, about 5-foot-9-inches tall with a goatee and short buzz-style haircut. He was wearing black baggy jeans, a navy blue T-shirt and a black hooded sweatshirt.

Police ask anyone with information to call them at 874-8575.
