Gear bag: Personal flotation devices

Each week the BDN Maine Outdoors team takes a look at different gear you might need for your next outdoor adventure. For this week’s Gear Bag, we looked at personal flotation devices.

What is it? Luke LaBree, marketing communications manager of Johnson Outdoors Watercraft Inc, explained that personal floatation devices, or PFDs, are an essential part of any water activity.

Why do I need it? Safety is important on the water even if you’re an experienced paddler. You want to make sure you always have a PFD with you, that you’re following local laws and that anyone 10 years or younger is always wearing their PFD. The new Extrasport E-series PFDs are extremely lightweight, breathable and comfortable. The vest is made up of a bump foam insert with a mesh cover. This allows air to flow through, keeping you cool on hot days.

How much does it cost? The Extrasport E-series start around $130. The more introductory PDFs, that have the same amount of floatation but less ventilation, start around $40-$60.

Where do I find it? Extrasport PFDs are available at Ski Rack in Bangor.
