PORTLAND, Maine — A man died Wednesday afternoon after falling from a second-floor porch, according to a statement from city communications director Jessica Grondin.

Donald Stain, 53, had gone out for a cigarette and was alone on the porch when a railing gave way, according to the statement.

Stain fell about 19 feet, landing on asphalt surface. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to city inspection records, there is no indication of any prior or active complaints from the porch, and an inspection of the building is ongoing.

Foul play does not appear to be involved in Stain’s death.
