AUBURN, Maine — Organizers of the annual Great Falls Balloon Festival announced Friday morning they had discovered that a storage trailer used to store festival property had been burglarized.

The copper power cords used to electrify the field at Simard-Payne Memorial Park were stolen, according to a written statement from festival spokeswoman Christina Noonan.

Police are investigating the incident, she said, but it appears that the robbery occurred in the late fall or early winter.

According to Noonan’s statement, festival organizers are working with an electrician to determine a replacement cost, but initial estimates are about $40,000 to $50,000.
