PORTLAND, Maine — Two children from the Dominican Republic traveled to Maine last month for heart surgery at Maine Medical Center.

Cristal, 4, had surgery on Feb. 13, followed by Yeremy, 12, on Feb. 27, according to a press release from the hospital, which did not disclose their last names. Both procedures were performed by Dr. Reed Quinn as part of MMC’s Pediatric Cardiac Care Fund.

Their care was made possible by many local individuals and organizations, including the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary and the Portland Rotary. The rotaries sponsor the “Gift of Life” program, which helps secure lifesaving surgeries for needy children from around the world. The clubs helped to fund travel costs for the families and provided clothing and support during their stay.

The Ronald McDonald House provided housing for the families, who planned to return to the Dominican Republic on March 11.
