CARTHAGE, Maine — A 69-year-old Carthage man was released from the Franklin County Jail Saturday on $50,000 cash bail after he was charged with felony trafficking in scheduled drugs.
John Ellis Sr. was arrested Friday night after Maine State Police stopped him for alleged speeding and allegedly found marijuana, cocaine, prescription pills and suspected drug money in his car.
Ellis was charged with Class B felony trafficking in scheduled drugs, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Trooper Randy Hall stopped Ellis’ vehicle on Route 142 and allegedly smelled marijuana, prompting a search of the vehicle that allegedly turned up an undisclosed amount of marijuana, cocaine, “many” assorted prescription pills, drug paraphernalia and $2,500 in cash that police suspect is “drug money.”
Troopers later searched Ellis’ home and allegedly found more cocaine, prescription pills and an additional $3,900 of suspected drug money.
Ellis was released on $50,000 cash bail on Saturday morning, according to Sheriff Scott Nicholas at Franklin County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in Franklin County District Court on April 7.
