FORT KENT, Maine — The 2015 Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races is happening in northern Maine this weekend. Mushers from around the United States and Canada will face off in three different length races: 30 miles, 60 miles or 250 miles.

I’ve never mushed or even watched anyone mush for that matter, but Bangor Daily News reporter Julia Bayly, and avid musher, let me borrow three of her dogs for a quick run around her property at Rusty Metal Farms. Bayly has been mushing for 14 years and assured me I would be fine with the three dogs.

Her one rule, don’t let go. No matter what happens, do not let go of the sled.

Bayly gave me the basic rundown of how to mush. Gee for right. Haw for left. Both of which I forgot five minutes into mushing. Keep the line tight, and use the brake if needed.
