AUGUSTA, Maine — Two men were arrested on Tuesday night after a disturbance involving a gun on Mount Vernon Avenue, according to police.

Officers were called to a residence shortly before 9 p.m. when a woman reported some sort of disturbance and several gunshots were heard, according to Augusta police Lt. Christopher Read.

Police were able to find two men, Nathan Bernheisel, 35, of Gardiner and Anthony Perry, 50, of Augusta, hiding in closets and they were subsequently arrested, Read said.

A firearm was found on the floor in the residence, but it was not clear who fired the weapon, according to Read.

Bernheisel was charged with unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs, failing to provide a correct name and on two warrants, one for theft and one for criminal trespass, while Perry was charged on an unpaid fines warrant and taken to Kennebec County Jail.

The incident remains under investigation.
