BANGOR—The John Bapst Memorial HIgh School annual alumni hockey game drew 25 former Crusaders to the ice on Dec. 27 at Sawyer Arena. The game featured players from the 2013 team all the way back to 1996 — and even Jon Davis, a graduate from 1972.
Davis never got to play hockey for the school as there wasn’t a hockey team at the time. Instead, he played for the recreational team in Old Town, then played for the start-up youth hockey team in Bangor, where he skated with area youngsters Larry Mahoney, Mike Roberts and the Lander brothers. Years later, a job transfer brought Davis back to Bangor. He was instrumental in starting the Brewer Youth Hockey organization and became Brewer High School’s first hockey coach. Recently Davis coached the Adult Learn To Play program at Penobscot Ice Arena and has been active in the adult hockey leagues for years. Through it all, though, something was missing, he said. His days of doodling and designing Bapst uniforms while sitting in classes all those years ago kept calling Davis back. He dreamed of donning the purple and white Crusader hockey jersey. After graduating 42 years ago, his dream finally came true.
The final score in the game was Purple 6, White 1.
Playing for the Purple team were Eli Szydlo, class of 2013; Derrick Antworth, ’10; Ray Hummels, ’14; Matt Youngblood, ’11; Joey Pate, ’12; Jarrod Guimond, ’96; Zac Greenier, ’05; John Cooper, ’08; Matthew Spear, ’14; Jacob Fletcher, ’13; Alex LaFrance, ’13; and Jacob Leonard, ’11. The Purple team was coached by Kurt Massey, ’13; with Jaron Leonard, ’13, handling the goaltending duties.
The White team was coached by Todd Massey with Juli Alex, ’07, in net. Players on the White team were Joe Archambault, ’14; Nick Doucette, ’12; Chris Dunbar, ’08; Neal LaFrance, ’08; Connor Scofield, ’08; Jacob Reese, ’14; Mike Keim, ’10; Kim Meagher, ’04; Ethan Handley, ’14; Maggie Lynn, ’11; Brianne Robertson, ’11; and Jon Davis, ’72. Game officials were Sam Lander, ’15, and Cody Lally, ’17.
The John Bapst hockey program was started 25 years ago with Head Coach Ray Thibodeau and has been a success with a number of former players going onto college and professional hockey careers, including Kim Meagher, ’04, Boston college and University of Maine; Jarrod Guimond, ’96, University of Southern Maine; Shawn Damon, ’93, Bentley University; and Derek Damon, University of Maine and the European Hockey League.
The game was attended by special guests Doug and Cherie Damon, and Anne Britt who helped start the team in 1990 along with the Archer family. Damon was the head coach for a number of years.
The annual alumni game is held each year during the Christmas holiday break.
