Brewer police arrest local man on child sex abuse charges

BREWER, Maine — Brewer police have arrested a local man on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and sexual abuse of a minor.

Kirk Panther, 21, of Brewer was arrested Tuesday after a three-week investigation and the execution of two search warrants by Brewer police Sgt. Jay Munson, Brewer police Lt. Chris Martin said Thursday.

Panther was arraigned Thursday at the Penobscot Judicial Center, Martin said.

Panther was released on $2,500 cash bail later in the day, a Penobscot County Jail official confirmed. Martin said Panther’s bail conditions include that he not have contact with the victim or her family.

Sexual exploitation of a minor is a Class B felony that carries a minimum mandatory sentence of five years in prison. Sexual abuse of a minor is a Class D crime punishable by up to one year in jail.
