BRUNSWICK, Maine — Employees at some of the stores at the Cook’s Corner Mall were evacuated shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, when a fire in a storage area behind the mall filled several stores with smoke.
The fire was reported at 9:07 a.m. There was heavy smoke when firefighters from Brunswick, Bath and West Bath arrived.
Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said fire crews found a pile of leaves in the storage area on fire.
Brillant said the fire was quick to put out, “but the building is full of smoke,” especially a Staples store. He also expressed concern about the level of carbon monoxide in the building
Firefighters used a large water-powered fan to clear the store.
A Big Lots employee reported smoke in the building, and a fire alarm at Staples was activated very shortly after, Brillant said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In addition to aid from Bath and West Bath, the Topsham Fire Department provided station coverage.
