HARRISON, Maine — A local man was arrested Saturday at Spring Harbor Hospital and charged with gross sexual assault of a child.

Matthew R. Farrar, 43, was charged with the crime, which was elevated to a Class A felony because the child is younger than 12, according to Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The alleged victim was known to Farrar and the incident reportedly took place in Harrison late last week. The child reported it to her mother, who called the sheriff’s office.

It was unclear why Farrar was at Spring Harbor Hospital at the time of his arrest.

He was booked at the Cumberland County Jail and arraigned Monday, according to Goulet. He remains at the jail and is held on $15,000 cash bail. No court date was immediately available.
