BREWER, Maine — Two local men were charged with attempted robbery Sunday night after a failed attempt to steal a woman’s purse at the Brewer Wal-Mart.

As of early Monday evening, suspects Travis Carey, 27, of Bangor and Eric Ronco, 28, of Brewer remained at Penobscot County Jail, unable to post bail of $1,000 cash and $1,500 cash respectively, a jail official said.

Ronco also was charged with violating conditions of his release from a prior arrest, according to the jail’s weekly arrest summary.

The attempted robbery charge is a Class B felony that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to $20,000.

Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said Monday that the incident that led to the arrests happened about 8:15 p.m., when the two attempted to snatch a woman’s purse inside the store. A physical struggle ensued during which the woman managed to hang onto her pocketbook, he said.

The duo then left the store in a vehicle that got onto Interstate 395 and then headed for Bangor on Interstate 95, Moffitt said. Brewer police caught up with the suspects near the Stillwater Avenue exit in Bangor and placed both under arrest.

Surveillance footage from the store indicated that the two worked together in the robbery attempt, Moffitt said.
