AUBURN, Maine — A 33-year-old Mechanic Falls woman was killed when a tractor-trailer truck struck her in the parking lot of Walmart on Mount Auburn Avenue early Thursday morning.

Kassandra Lavoie died at the scene, according to local police.

Lavoie had been a suspect in a Lewiston theft case investigated by police on Wednesday.

Local police had responded at 12:22 a.m. Thursday to the parking lot for a report of a suspicious person. Officers spoke with Lavoie, who was issued a criminal summons for Wednesday’s theft and for unlawful use or possession of inhalants, according to a written release by Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen. She had been released and had last been seen walking in the direction of Turner Street.

Hasan Williams, 40, of Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, was driving the truck when it struck Lavoie in the parking lot at 1:11 a.m. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Moen said. Local police were assisted by Maine State Police, who reconstructed the accident.
