Snowmobile races at Bangor’s Bass Park used to be an annual event and were part of Winter Fun ‘95, which was a celebration of winter in Bangor.
But there hasn’t been snowmobile racing in several years.
Snowmobile racing in the form of snocross, which is motocross on snowsleds, will return to Bass Park on Jan. 10-11.
It will be either the first or second event on the East Coast Snocross series, which is presented by AMSOIL and Woody’s Traction.
Bangor’s Eastern Maine Community College Foundation has teamed up with the Hollywood Casino to hold the event.
“We were looking at ways to raise money and we felt this was a good option,” said CarolAnne Dube, the executive director of the EMCC Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
“We’re very excited. It’s a great partnership [between the EMCC Foundation, Hollywood Casino and East Coast Snocross],” said Dube.
Dube pointed out that there are 87,000 registered snowmobiles in Maine and that they anticipate the event will bring 10,000 people to the Bangor area.
“And some people tell us 10,000 may be a conservative estimate,” she said.
Hollywood Casino is one of the “top tier sponsors” said Dube, who added that Bangor city officials also have been “very helpful.”
Shawn Achilles, general manager of East Coast Snocross, said he was contacted by officials from the EMCC Foundation about the possible venture.
“It’s a great fit,” he said. “We liked the location and the population, and we have a great following in Maine. The people at the college have been excited and friendly, and they’re definitely putting the work in which will help bring in spectators.”
Dube said they have students already working on the logistics of hosting the event and some will serve as volunteers at it.
East Coast Snocross will provide the staff to run the event and will bring snowmaking equipment in case there isn’t an adequate amount of snow.
Dube said they are seeking more sponsors and are optimistic about the money-making potential.
“We expect a decent profit by the time we meet our expenses,” said Dube, who added that the profits will be used to benefit the students and programs at EMCC.
Snocross involves snowmobiles negotiating tight turns, banked corners, steep jumps and other obstacles. It is a Winter X Games event.
