PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Police Department is seeking the public’s help finding a person of interest in the reported assault of a child in the East Bayside neighborhood last weekend.

About 3 a.m. Sunday, a Greenleaf Street resident called police to report that a burglary had just occurred, Lt. James Sweatt said Wednesday evening in a news release.

Police learned that a man had gone in an apartment and sexually assaulted a young child, Sweatt said. The man fled the apartment when an adult heard a disturbance in the child’s room and came to investigate.

Police are seeking Julian M. Soto, 25, of 39 Greenleaf St. for questioning in connection with the assault. Soto is described as a light-skinned Hispanic man with dark hair. He is 5 foot, 8 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds.

“We have been unable to locate him and ask anyone with information about Soto’s whereabouts to contact police immediately,” Sweatt said.

Residents are urged to lock all doors and windows and report any suspicious activity to police, Sweatt said, adding that police are unable to release additional details about the incident because it remains under investigation.
